Why so much hate on Angel?

I am a Spuffy but certainly do not hate Angel. I appreciated his and Buffy’s relationship even if it was overly saccharine for me. I really liked his development on his own show and his relationship with other characters like Wes, Fred and Cordy. I think he came into his own as a character.
