I always felt he was very consistent. Spike appears more or less fully formed in School Hard. All his major personality traits are introduced in that episodes.

Spike was consistent in S2 because he was David Greenwalt's creation and he had the character very well characterized. Later though there is multi personality Spike. But I'm done with the off topic discussion really.
Only that Spike, no good for Buffy. If only because Buffy became subservient to his character development and nothing but a tool in his story. I'll pass thanks.

Actually, I'm adding Amy Madison. The only time post-rat we saw the core of who Amy was beneath the rage & resentment was when she talked to Buffy in Smashed. She had a real conversation without ulterior motives and showed kindness and vulnerability. Take Willow out of the equation and the two girls could've had a great friendship and helped each other heal. They were both adjusting to being in human form again, dead mom and dad who they couldn't connect with anymore.

I do believe Spike and Buffy changed each other for the better, though they also did a lot of damage to each other, it was part of a long process of growing. Even if they hadn't ended up together, I think that Buffy owed Spike her life, b/c he saved her literally when she was dancing herself to death, and I think she owed him for getting through things, because in Spike, she found someone non-judgmental and supportive -- someone she could talk to when she was broken up inside and really couldn't talk to her 'friends', who had dragged her from her heavenly rest. I believe she would have given up if Spike hadn't been there. Her mother was gone, she had money problems, a crumbling house, a grieving, confused child to raise, and who at 20 is ready to raise a teenager? No one raised a hand to help. But Spike was there for her.
I think Spike owes his transformation to Buffy, however... she helped him become a man, not just a monster.
While I believe that Willow did a good many things for Buffy, bringing her back from the dead she did for herself, because she could, and for the scoobies b/c they felt lost without Buffy. They didn't do it for Buffy, they did it TO Buffy, and came close to destroying her in the process. (IMO, Only Spike's presence as a punching bag, confidant, sex 'partner', and eventual friend and partner saved her from that.)
So, it wasn't the act of a friend, it was the act of someone drunk on power, arrogant, and selfish. The unselfish, and wise thing would have been to find out where Buffy was before considering attempting dark, dangerous, world ending magics that Buffy would be forced to solve when The First Evil was granted entry into the world BECAUSE of the VIOLATION of the rules of life and death and the violation perpetrated upon Buffy by dragging her back to life and leaving her to dig out of her coffin like a common (evil) vampire. It wasn't a rescue, it was a curse. It was punishment. You don't violate the champion of the people, you let her rest!
Giles... was such a mixed blessing. On the one hand, in the first 3 seasons, we see her benefit from having him as a friend, father figure and mentor. Other than the cruciamentum, he's great for her. But he's a creature of the council. When he looks at the girl who crawled out of her grave, who is broke and having to raise a traumatized, brokenhearted teenager and basically tells her 'grow up and be an adult' and goes back to England... well, that's the first major betrayal. It's not logical. It's mean and unkind, but it doesn't even make common sense. It is abandonment. She could have killed herself.
Back in season five she gets him his salary back... but here she is trying to save the world, and she's supposed to do what? Turn tricks like Faith probably had to in order to survive while saving the world? Doublemeat Palace was a disgrace. No, she should have been paid, and more than him, frankly, b/c he's just the support, she saved the world. Hazard pay anyone? She's died for you people twice!!! what does it take?
What Giles does in season seven is betrayal writ large. He dumps the potentials on her. Dumps the problem of the First at her door, then when she comes up with ideas (and yes, makes some mistakes) he undercuts her... in front of strangers... not such a fatherly act. And she helps a stranger he knows has a grudge trick Buffy so he can kill Spike. That's not a fatherly act either.
I agree. Her mom started OK, made mistakes, but slowly got better... I really do believe she was a great mom and friend and support, particularly as Buffy got older.
Well, I mostly agree. I think they had a great relationship, but Dawn really messed up in season seven by banding together with the betrayers who threw Buffy out of her house. But she was a scared kid. So I give her a bit of a pass.
These are people (in addition to the core group) I think were good for Buffy, though she might not always have seen it.
Tara: she was a very positive force in Buffy's life at a time she was having a hard time. She was someone who Buffy could talk to and who didn't judge her.
Cordelia: Oddly enough, I think she was good for Buffy and co. She was always a straight shooter, and she was smart. Someone needed to tell it like it was. She always did. I think her role in the group was underestimated.
Faith: I think she could have become one of Buffy's closest friends had they realized just how much she was going through, but I think Buffy learned a lot from her... much of it because she saw the road she could have taken. I think she also learned from Kendra how not to be a slayer, but it was more minor. Faith was the bad girl and Kendra was goody too shoes. Buffy was somewhere in the middle.
The scoobies: They were a great support to her, mostly up until season five. From there on, it was really mixed for me. It seemed as if they thought she had to answer to them for her entire life, because they were helping her.
Honorable mention:
Dr. Gregory: I so wish he'd lived. I think he could have been a great support to Buffy.
