Which characters do you feel helped Buffy evolve the most & were the best for her?

Mine would be
1. Spike - I loved the love story between Buffy and Spike and they were an amazing story in the show & in the comics!
2. Willow - She was an amazing friend to Buffy. She constantly was there for her and even brought her back from the dead! Now that's love!
3. Giles - he was the father figure that she never had and helped her train and grow stronger as a person. I love them together.
4. Joyce - Her loving mom who always kept her grounded with her roots and her death was so emotional for not only Buffy but for the group and Buffy really had to grow up without her.
5. Dawn - She constantly had something to protect/live for even though sometimes Dawn wasn't always appreciative of Buffy! Lol! But they had a great sister bond which I loved seeing.

In no particular order, I would say:

Giles - the father figure and authority figure she needed in her life, both as Buffy the girl and Buffy the Slayer.
Dawn - the sister she needed to protect, which helped her to focus and not allow too many distractions into her life.
Kendra & Faith - the Slayers that taught Buffy what not to do, on either side of the spectrum.
Angel, Riley, Spike - her various relationships were all important, whether they were healthy for her or not, because they made her who she was. They could be her weaknesses at times, but every single one of them has, at one point or another, been a strength for her.
Xander & Willow - the friends she wasn't supposed to have. They were both her strength and support in different, nuanced ways and she wouldn't be Buffy without her core, lame as that may sound.

Good list!
Never would have thought of Kendra or faith on this list!!!

1. Joyce - Obviously Buffy's mother is the most important person in her life, everything fell apart when she died. Joyce kept her normal so even though she was a slayer, Joyce was that person pushing her to be a normal girl anyway and go to school, and date.
2. Dawn - Like Joyce, this is her family, and somebody she'd protect at all costs.
3. Xander- she would have died in season 1 without him.
4. Giles- As Buffy said, Giles taught her everything she needed to know 🙂

I'm surprised you put Xander and not Willow haha!

Willow was a great friend to Buffy but I could think of more examples of times where Xander did things for Buffy over Willow 🙂

I would have to disagree with that one for me. Well besides for the fact that I despise Xander.
The way he reacts sometimes to Buffy wasn't good imo. Dead Man's Party is a great example of that.

1. Willow - Could you ask for a more loyal friend?
2. Joyce - Joyce has her flaws, but she tries. She made Buffy feel a little safer.
3. Dawn - Dawn is much more than someone to protect. Dawn can lay down some truth.
4. Xander - Xander could be a pain, but he has his moments. Freshman, Family, Seeing Red, etc.
5. Tara - Everybody could use a visit from Tara.

The boyfriends are difficult to rate. Each of them brought Buffy their own recipe of pain and joy.

I just feel like those moments while unacceptable are such a short part of Xander's run on Buffy, he says the odd bad thing and then you have people writing articles on how he's an evil man and such a terrible friend but I guess everybody interprets Xander differently 🙂

Joyce:
Buffy needed a mother desperately to survive for quite a while. (Think Innocence) Even though she's not always the greatest mother, she has Buffy's best interests at heart and that is essential.
Giles:
Buffy couldn't have asked for a better mentor; he taught her a lot while (almost) always being supportive and there for here. As a father, he truly loved her, and as a watcher, he couldn't have been more proud.
Dawn:
The introduction of Dawn forced Buffy to be more of an adult, much to her dismay, which was important. As Dawn grows, Buffy grows as well. Dawn's worst moments are when Buffy is at her darkest hours. Not a coincidence.
Willow:
After family, Willow soars above the rest of the competition; as she is not only a much needed ally but a best friend in the real world and the supernatural world. Not everyone needs an absolute best friend, but Buffy did.

I've been guilty to hate Xander haha.
There was just a lot more bad then good for me.
I can see why he has fans and I did like him in Season 1. Just after that he went downhill for me

This is mine except add Spike! He's an amazing way how Buffy evolved and grew up !

Of her boyfriends, Angel. Spike made Buffy an inhumane monster. Riley never got close enough to really have a lasting effect on her. She tended to be her most open when with Angel and she was generally a better person and hero when he was around.

Of her parental figures...Hank, Giles and Joyce. Mmm. Hank started Buffy's immense abandonment issues which are driving Buffy STILL (even in the comics from what I understand, it's the reason she jumped Spike). Giles as mentor for the slayer and a sort of stable father figure, well until he abandoned her. Joyce was a terrible mother and some of Buffy's issues also are because of that. But since the question is about 'best', I'm going with Giles as he had the best run while the show was going on.

Neither Willow nor Xander make my list. The Scoobie relationship is my fave one on the show but it's an effed up catch-22 relationship. Neither Xander nor Willow were good for Buffy, the person. I would, if I could redo the scoobies, replace Willow and Xander with Tara and Oz. Those two fit much better with Buffy's character.

Cordelia was a perfect foil for Buffy. Someone who didn't base her life around Buffy or her place in Buffy's life. Someone with the confidence to tell Buffy to get over herself. Someone who expected her opinion to be heard. She was great for keeping Buffy's ego in check.

1. Angel. He taught her about true love, sacrifice, and the importance of "the mission."

2. Tara. She was an ideal "older sister" figure. Buffy needed someone who would listen to her, without judging.

3. Giles. Just a fantastic bloke, really. He had his faults, but overall he was a great support to her.

4. Willow. A bit scattered at times, yet she was the absolute definition of a best friend.

5. Faith. She showed Buffy how badly things could go if she let loose too much; Slayers NEED rules, which is why there was a Watcher's Council.

Joyce: Buffy didn't know how much she'd benefitted from her mother's presence until she lost her. Money, clothes and a home were never an issue in her hard life. Her mom never even asked her for rent after Buffy went back to live at home in S5 or a part time job to help out when she was in high school.

Giles: He was the father figure Buffy desperately needed and a very flexible watcher that worked well with her rebellious personality.

Xander: Can we just agree that without this guy Buffy would have been dead like more than once in the first season alone? Xander was Buffy's rock with the perfect speech at the most dire times and fixing her house for free and babysitting her sister and taking her to and from school everyday. He never sought a normal life even though he was told he did nothing to contribute and was never appreciated, yet he stuck around and made sure he did his job well. (Who would reject Anya's offer to run away from a possible death when all odds were against him?)

Willow: She was the definition of a true best friend.

Buffy's boyfriends: each one of them was good for Buffy in his own way.

SPIKE: He was good for her in so many ways, especially S6 (yes I know this is controversial!) and definitely in S7. The Slayer is complex, and her surround of family + friends often unintentionally made her feel alien, self-doubting, and guilty at her authentic feelings. Spike provided her with a space for refuge and self-discovery, even if it was initially painful and confusing. It eventually made her a more balanced, stronger Slayer, capable of accepting her own capacity for darkness, and realising that it was OK to have that side and it made her no less worthy of love. Spike was a catalyst to bring out strength and clarity in Buffy. To give a buddhist example: a glass with dirt sitting at the bottom layer looks clean and transparent when still, but when stirred, causes the mud to rise and come to surface. Spike helped her see herself with more clarity and rise above her own inner fears, and she was a similar catalyst for him, making him see his own monstrousness to propel him to change, and he ended up with a soul. Spike and Buffy were the opposite of delusional love. They skirted it, yes, but were ultimately forced to unflinchingly see themselves in a mirror and improve on themselves. They loved each other for their authentic selves, not idealised versions. Buffy's issues of guilt/ self loathing mirrored Spike's angst in dealing with feelings opposite to his calling ("there's a traitor here beneath my breast", "I touch the fire and it freezes me"). She felt like a fraud Slayer often, feeling like nobody could love her true self, that she could only be accepted if she fell in line with the "norm". The love she got from from family/friends was expansive, but conditional to an extent. (Her fight with Joyce had her leave home, Giles, Dawn and even Willow mutinied in Empty Places, Giles left at a time she really needed him, etc.) With Spike, it was unconditional, which was good for her.

WILLOW: Willow literally brought her back from the dead! That's a big deal. Willow was a relentless ally and an incredibly supportive friend through thick and thin. They grew through life's challenges together, which was so good for her. Willow was close to being as powerful as Buffy, which helped them bond sometimes in mutual understanding of inner struggles. Neither was ever consciously judgmental of the other. It was beautiful to watch their friendship. I loved how protective Willow was of Buffy too, emotionally and otherwise.

Giles: An indispensable, loving (and lovable) father figure. My favourite moment between them (and which surprised me) is when Buffy, squirming and ashamed, relates to him how money is tight, she's been sleeping with Spike, and Dawn's "gone klepto", simply burst out laughing, till she cracks up with him at the absurd comicality of it all. No judgement. It was a beautiful moment. Giles has always been an incredible figure of support and anchoring.

Dawn: Dawn was a bit of a whiner, yes, and at times proved a lot for Buffy to take responsibility for, but Dawn utterly loved Buffy. She depended on her but she also hero-worshipped her, and was fiercely protective of her. I think she was good for Buffy in all those respects.

Tara: This might seem an unusual choice, but Tara was wonderful for Buffy. She was a somewhat new addition to the Scoobies, so she could function as an objective outsider, but was also close enough to trust. She had remarkable maturity, insight, and sensitivity when talking to Buffy. Tara was the only one to be immediately understanding and accepting when Buffy hated herself in 'Dead Things', crying that there was something wrong with her. She accepted her free of judgement, and free of conditions, telling her it wasn't unhealthy for her to be with Spike. When Joyce died, Tara was also a support, offering to talk to her from her own experience, should Buffy feel the need.

Joyce: Her loving, fiercely protective, and understanding mom. She anchored and grounded Buffy in untold ways, and was a wellspring of love and support.

Angel: Putting their romantic angle aside, Angel was a great ally, and came by to fight by her side at crucial points.

Riley (sort of): Yes, I'm putting Riley in, but with a HUGE caveat: I think he was in equal parts terrible for her but also good for her. He had some redeeming features in the ways he was good for her - I think he genuinely tried his best to be a great boyfriend for Buffy. He was (for the most part) stable, supportive, loving, I liked his final stand against the robotic military reductionism of the Initiative. I liked how romantic he was with her in the beginning, I love that he provided some stable strength when at her side. I love how he let it slip that she was "still quite the hottie" in As You Were- he might have simply thought it but not said it (considering she dumped him.) I love the little bit of wisdom he imparted to Buffy: "wheel's always turning, Buffy." I loved the way he gingerly tried to flirt with her at the beginning, it was touching and it was also great the way he tried to swallow some of his insecurity to hold it through until the crisis with Buffy's mom dissipated. I could tell Buffy honestly felt happy at having a "stable" boyfriend finally (or so she thought.) But there were countless ways in which he was absolutely TERRIBLE for her and actually contributed to her self-destruction to some extent, so that's why this comes last.

I think people who helped Buffy evolve the most were the ones who gave her experiences that made her grow. I’m part way through season 6 of my first watch, but these are the people as of this point that I think shaped her most as a person.

- Giles - He didn’t tell her what to do and instead worked with her to make decisions. Then later, he left to force her to continue to grown when he realized she depended on him too much.
- The Scoobies - Everyone can help in their own way.
- The Master - Her first big bad. Taught her not to accept prophecy as the final word.
- Spike - You can’t just be friends with someone you’re in love with.
- Angel - Her first love. She learned that not all vampires are evil and that she had the strength in herself to sacrifice the man she loved to save the world. And later, to let him go so they could both move on.
- The Mayor - She was able to convince her friends and classmates to come together to help defeat a big bad who was too powerful for her to defeat alone.
- Faith - Buffy learned from her not to trust people so easily and also to forgive
- Joyce - She learned she could make it through tragedy and grow into a responsible adult
- Dawn - She learned what it was to care for a person who depends on you and to sacrifice herself to protect the people she loved
- The Watcher’s Council - To not let people push her around and to take ownership of her power and use it to build alliances to achieve common goals.

I'm going for intent here, who deliberately tried to help Buffy evolve: pep talks and life-saving don't really count since everyone has done them.

Angel: First love but he actually helped her evolve the most by leaving Sunnydale. Riley and Spike never really helped Buffy better herself (for different reasons) but she did learn from them- there is a difference.
Giles: I can't stress enough how much his support helped shape her character for the better ('the Wish' anyone?), he was a stuffy so-and-so with endless warmth, wry humor and patience underneath. Buffy was lucky to have him.
Dawn: Whether you like her or not Buffy changed an awful lot from S5 onward and lost a lot of her 'single-child' brattiness she had, she became more grownup and learned to provide for another.
Cordelia & Faith (honorable mention to Kendra): We are often defined as much by what we are NOT as much as by what we are. Buffy's shadow selves are very much unafraid to speak truth to Buffy when they have nothing to gain themselves.
On another level almost everything Faith said about Buffy turns out to be true by the end of the series.

I think when it comes to Xander and Willow they kept Buffy 'on course' rather than help her evolve, as friends often do. Not to say that this isn't valuable and important- Buffy wouldn't have gotten as far as she did without them- but I don't see them as deliberately trying to change Buffy, they try and support her.

Riley and Spike never really helped Buffy better herself (for different reasons) but she did learn from them- there is a difference.

Agreed. Very much like I can learn from a traumatic event in my life it doesn’t mean that said traumatic event was what was best for me . It means I overcame a struggle.
