I got mine for $20, and that was with a pity discount for even used and already somewhat shredded docs (though still functional). They were also the only thing that fit my feet there, at least without looking like they wouldn't also split open (I'd lost a shoe and didn't have anymore).@thrasherpix they are my second pair of docs and I love them. I became a fan of the sex pistols after having to do a sociology project on Punks 3 years ago so I had to get them (how I’m excusing spending over £100 on a pair of boots).
I didn't consider myself a punk, though I was friends with many at the time. I wore the spiked rings (got 'em at the same store for a dollar each) for self-defense because I lived in a very dangerous area (and they did serve me well in one fight against 3 guys menacing me, as did my docs). These were punks in the USA of 1998, I'm sure different (at least in some ways) from either of your day or the 1970s. My hair was short, though, and it's possible that people assumed I was a punk fashionista, especially when in the company of punks.

I'm not punk either, my style is more "is it black? and do I like it?". And as I have kind of play-fights with my friends, my docs did give me a bit of an advantage.
