What toys did you play with as a kid?

The one i enjoyed the most for potential danger was the Gilbert chemistry set. I loved some of the cool colours things turned in reactions. But being truly crazed i had to see what was the worst thing i could do and so i made up my own combos, including once mixing some of everything. Sadly, nothing exploded and i am still here so the fumes must not have been so poisonous. I wonder what it took them to come up with a set that did not have any truly dangerous reactions.

I suspect some of what i mixed might have been poisonous if i had drunk them, but i was crazy, not sucidal! Also brown frothing smelly gunge was not my cuppa! For some reason.

Never had a slip and slide but friends did. And being from the third world, people improvised with random plastic. I suspect some still do. Cool water play in the tropics during summer holidays? Yes please!

Amazingly, you can still buy chemistry set toys, though I suspect that the contents have been tamed down a lot.
Soft toys, like fluffy animals and teddy bears. It was always stuffed toys for me. I hated barbie and dolls. I always chopped their hair off and drew on their faces. The only dolly that survived me was a cabbage patch doll. I was not ever a fan of dolls at all.

I loved my soft animals. I had quite a collection 🙂 I loved arranging them on my bed, as if they were in a school photo. They all had names and personalities. My dad made me throw them out because I was "too old" for toys. I really regret that. My bunnies would have LOVED the soft toys. They used to kiss and cuddle any plush that I bought for them. My dogs would have loved those toys too, even if just to rip out the stuffing, they would have had a blast. Better than just ending up in the bin, as they did. I had to buy a new teddy bear to sleep with. I tried for years being a grown up and sleeping without one, but I missed it so decided I'd just buy a new one.

Despite being a horse girl, I never really had any horse toys. Nor really wanted them. I didnt see the point in plastic ponies.

I did really want a tamogotchi. I used to "babysit" them during lunch time for all my friends who had them. I was paid in snacks. We sometimes had maccas cheeseburger fundraisers where they would sell cheeseburgers for $1 each, and in one lunchtime I got 10 for looking after other peoples tamogotchis. I never had a tamogotchi of my own, but I still got to play with them at least.

Hey, 'Ember. It's nice to see you around again. Your presence was missed.

So... how did you feel about dolls? I'm not sure. 😉

I didn't have a ton of stuffed animals, but I did have some, and I always named mine, including a bunny I named Greg after the Seth Green television series Greg the Bunny (which I completely forgot about until this very moment.) When I got some as an adult, I still named them. I guess it's the human tendency towards anthropomorphism. Cars, computers, boats, stuffed animals. We'll treat anything like it's a person.

My dad made me throw them out because I was "too old" for toys.

That's too bad. I don't get that. Stuffed animals can just be decoration, even if you're "too old for toys" (a concept I don't really agree with in principle to begin with.) I have Snoopy, Eyore, Asami Sato, Batman, and any number of figures and plushies in my house.

I had to buy a new teddy bear to sleep with. I tried for years being a grown up and sleeping without one, but I missed it so decided I'd just buy a new one.

Nothing ungrownup about that from where I sit. Data from various studies suggests that between one in three and one in four adults sleep with a comfort object of one sort or another (a stuffed animal, body pillow, special blanket or pillow, etc.) It's not a fringe minority thing.

Yay, good to know I'm statistically normal, almost?

I think its the faces. I hate selfies too. Maybe thats why I love forums so much, I can chat to people without having to look at faces. Its relaxing.

Its funny how memories pop up! Its a lot of fun to remember things we forget, when they are fun things anyway.

For me, its more that I treat animals as friends. I never assumed that only people could be friends, the world has far more friends in it than just people! So my imagination developed the toys into pets. They were all what they were, the cat was a cat, the bears were bears (of the pooh variety, in my imagination), the dogs were dogs and the bunnies were bunnies that hopped. None were ever imagined as babies or people, but they still did have distinct personalities. I treat my pets now better than I treat most people lol.

Sigh, if only that had followed me into adulthood rather than my love for cheeseburgers.

Almost. Low estimates hit about twenty-three percent of adults, with high estimates hitting about forty-three percent. So you're well within the norm by statistical considerations.

Of course, we both know you're not normal, 'Ember. And I mean that as the biggest of compliments. 🙂

I think its the faces. I hate selfies too.

I guess that would make sense. You drew all over their faces. I'm not Sherlock Holmes (I'm not even Gary Jones), but there's an implied link there.

I suppose I can understand. I know looking at people while I talk can be stressful for me. Even with people I'm close to and trust implicitly, I rarely make eye contact, and never for more than a few moments. The only exception is when I'm in love. Forums, messengers, and chat rooms (for those old enough to remember such things as messengers and chat rooms) eliminate a great deal of social anxiety.

An important caveat. It is funny, though, good or bad, how the brain can sometimes summon a memory seemingly for no reason. There must be one, of course, but below the notice of your conscious mind, it seems incredibly arbitrary and bizarre at times.

For me, its more that I treat animals as friends. I never assumed that only people could be friends, the world has far more friends in it than just people!

My pets were always family to me, so I don't disagree with you there. As the great Radar O'Reilly once said, dogs are people too. 😉

I didn't mean in the sense of literally imagining they were people, of course, but just, as you said, bears of the Pooh Bear type (though, I'll be honest, I was always a bigger fan of Eyore), animals with human characteristics (intellect and personality, primarily.)

I treat my pets now better than I treat most people lol.

I don't blame you. Most people aren't as kind, nor as unconditionally loving, as most dogs.

Sigh, if only that had followed me into adulthood rather than my love for cheeseburgers.

Well, cheeseburgers are pretty great. I can't blame your brain for preferring them to business. Though being good at business would mean you could buy more cheeseburgers. Darn. I found an error in my thinking. 😛
