There has been a lot of talk these past few months about Season 10 being the last. But this talk is not from Dark Horse themselves. They're from other sources. so lets talk about it? 🙁

What other sources? Other than the usual speculation I see from fans each year I don't think I've heard anything. I'm not sure if it is likely to be the last season or not, it doesn't feel like they are building up to a major series finale to me. I could see them choosing to stop the comics sure, but with Angel off on his weird time travelling trip and BtVS in a social flux again it just seems a little ungrounded to tie it all off. But perhaps that could be the point, the world around them has changed and their roles/positions as they knew them changes and a line of some sort is drawn. I don't know, does it feel like it has series ending potential to you/others?

I really hope this isn't the last season, and I can't see any reason why it would be. Does anyone know what the sales figures are like?

It wouldn't surprise me if it were Angel's last season. Those comics have been truly terrible and it feels like the publishers want them to fail. I think the series will end with all the characters in the one comic so everyone's story ends at the same time.

The most recent sales numbers are out for May. For top comic sales, Buffy was #207 with 10,512 copies sold. Angel was #265 with 6,649.

Comparatively, the finale for Season 10 had Buffy at #180 with 12,119 copies sold. For Angel's finale, it was at #207 with 8,363 sold. Those numbers were good enough to get everything renewed, but I'm not sure where Dark Horse lands as far as when they cancel a series. They don't have many ongoing books that have lasted like Buffy, so it's hard to compare numbers.

Thanks for that. Are those figures good bad or average? As someone in the comic book biz, are those sales good enough to keep a title going? Are those international sales inclusive or just US sales?

I think it would be terrible to cancel the BtVS comic in the 20th anniversary year of the show, especially when the anniversary has been celebrated all over the media and must have encouraged a lot of new watchers.

With them starting off a new series of comic books (HS years), I don't see why they'd want to cancel it to be honest. If they thought there wasn't enough audience, they wouldn't have done another series.

If it does end, it'll be because Joss wants it to. And I'm not sure he's ready for it to end.

For a smaller publisher like Dark Horse, the Buffy number isn't terrible. Certainly not good, but looking over current Dark Horse sales, Buffy is currently their 5th best selling book and Angel is their 8th.

Comic sales come out about 2 months after the month has wrapped up. The number comes from how many books comic shops bought that month through Diamond Comic Distributors, and the majority of those sales are from preorders that are done 2 months in advance of the release.

I doubt it'll end with this season. The numbers are down from last season, but that happens with any ongoing book. Angel's sales put that book way more at risk than Buffy.

The title of Season 11 volume 2 has me slightly worried as it kinda sounds like we've come full circle.

Buffy Season 11 Volume 2: One Girl in All the World by Joss Whedon, Christos Gage | PenguinRandomHouse.com

On the other hand the hopeful look in the demons' faces at the bottom of the cover makes me kinda hopeful that it just refers to Buffy's shift in role from someone "standing against" all kinds of demons (first few seasons) to some sort of mediator (last few).

Edit: I just realized that both titles, that of volume one ("The Spread Of Their Evil") and two ("One Girl In All The World"), are from the opening narration from the early seasons of the show: "Into every generation a slayer is born: one girl in all the world, a chosen one. She alone will wield the strength and skill to fight the vampires, demons, and the forces of darkness; to stop the spread of their evil and the swell of their number. She is the Slayer."

I really hope this isn't a bad sign, echoing back to season 1 because we've reached the last season. But maybe we'll return to The Chosen One and all the other slayers will somehow lose their powers?

Yeah they would both get what they thought they always wanted.....
Buffy would no longer have the weight of the world on her shoulders & could live a normal life....
Faith would have what Buffy always had....

Bet they would both find it wasn't quite what they expected......

And Buffy & Spike can have a normal life. Or try.

Oh totally, but then the series would be over and we wouldn't get to examine why it wasn't what they expected and how they change . . . So really the series can never end 🙂

Maybe it's the huge decline of this Season itself. I might be wrong but I think S11 started with something like almost 15k copies sold. It's down to 5k less. That's quite a decline.

The first issue had a special variant cover which may explain the higher preorders that one received. The rest of the figures are reasonably steady for BtVS. I think some decrease during a season is pretty normal and BtVS at least is still one of DH's more successful titles. The other thing to consider is that none of these sales figures include the digital purchases I don't think (which personally I would expect to be an increasing point of sale)...

Buffy # 01 - 14,855
Buffy # 02 - 11,982
Buffy # 03 - 11,361
Buffy # 04 - 11,169
Buffy # 05 - 10,869

Angel # 01 - 9,318
Angel # 02 - 6,681
Angel # 03 - 7,075
Angel # 04 - 6,881
Angel # 05 - 6,649

Ooops, missed these two...

Buffy # 06 - 10,678
Buffy # 07 - 10,512

I've suspected that we might have a reversal of the Potential Made Slayers for a while now - using the connection to the Slayer-Chosen One series premise could very well be a foreshadow of coming events - but I can't see the series going to a place where it now becomes Faith the Vampire Slayer and we have Buffy lose her Slayer powers. It just totally seems wrong to me that this is where this story would end. I could only see this being an ending if the series were to end. And for all Buffy's former "I want a normal life" when she has had that opportunity, ends up she did not really like not having her Slayer power. Not only this, but the comic book seasons have Buffy absolutely accepting and dedicating her life as a Slayer - sorry I can't recall the issue. The contrary appears to be true - that Buffy is committed to continue fighting for what she considers is "the right thing to do" and fighting against the, what I call Slayer Thugs for Hire and against the dark forces of the government set free at this time. I would not be surprise if there is an attempt to drain the power from all of the Slayers and since Buffy continues to have the Slayer Scythe that it will be used to restore Buffy's powers. Plus, there has to be many Slayers who do not agree with what Jordan and that group of slayers are doing and would join the fight against them if it comes down to that. Personally, I should like nothing better than to see Jordan lose her Slayer powers, along with the others slayers working with her.

I have never like the idea of Kennedy's Slayers for Hire and would like to see that organization done away with.

That cover clearly has Buffy and Willow in the same group as the magical and supernatural life forms with the Great Machine ready to destroy them - much like the Star Wars characters willing to fight against the Empire forces. Personally, I would love to see where the Slayers come down in this political-social chaos - it's very much reflective of the real world political dynamics we are living through now. It's so easy to want to round up the "enemies of our peoples" when the extreme fears from an attack or perceived attacks are exploited. Who or What powers are really responsible for the Kraken/Dragon attack? Just as D'Hoffryn took all the powers from the Supernatural Life Forms Council - the same thing is happening with the taking of magical and supernatural powers now.

Regarding the ending of the series - It's the Angel series that is mostly likely to close - it's too bad that the creative decision was made to separate Faith and Angel as a team - I thought they were great working together. Sorry to the Fred fans but she has, IMO, been a pretty weak substitute for the Faith & Angel team.

The Slayers were a great experiment, and some of them have been interesting as individuals, but I'd love to return to The Chosen One, though isn't Faith actually the true Slayer? I think this is probably why Faith was removed from the Angel title, to show a different 'slayer' perspective on Buffy. It is conceivable that Faith might actually die trying to save the Slayer line. That would be an amazing end to the character, though I'm sure a lot of fans wouldn't agree.

I also wonder if Angel changing the past in his own comic is going to have an effect on Buffy and the Slayers. Though Angel's story actually seems to be going nowhere fast, there could be a big reveal at the end. I agree, Fred is a poor substitute for Faith in Season 11 and Illyria is just a bore.

And then Faith has her own spin off 😛

I really hope this isn't the last season. Although I have to admit, it's rather witty with the titles of the volumes to wrap it all together with the first season's Slayer opener.
I get it that comics can't last forever and four seasons on top of the TV show is really good. But it would be a shame to end it, as mentioned with it being the 20th year anniversary and the news of a new Buffy book as well as the high school spin offs, why stop now?

I highly doubt they could wrap everything up in the final few issues like Xander and Dawn's relationship, if Spike and Buffy can actually last through, does Willow finally get another shot at true romance? I'd be surprised and disappointed if they end it at this season.

Considering the number of irons that Joss has in the fire currently, with the new addition, apparently, of taking over the creative reins of the DC movie universe, I wouldn't be surprised if he puts the Buffyverse on hold for awhile again, but I can't see him actually putting an end to it permanently.

Returning to the "one girl in all the world" premise might be a possibility, though I don't like what that means for Faith. I always knew that, at some point, the number of active Slayers would have to be pared back, somehow, if for no other reason, that is the condition the world is in by the time that Fray is called.
