Thread 'Phones and children's addiction (and Tiktok, Instagram...)'

In my country (& other parts of the world surely) there's discussion about parents being careless and letting their children too young with phones like to babysit them. Children nowadays spent hours of days on tiktok, I've watched a video and a young girl could spend more 8 hours on her phone on weekend.

There's discussion about banning less than 15 years old people of using & owning phones.

What's your thoughts about the addiction of young children (even 2 years old children 😓) about phones ?

I got pinged on reddit. It asked for me to upload my government ID, a bank statement, or a photo of my face to access my account. So I didnt and wont. Not for reddit anyway, its not worth it. I will be MAD when it happens on instagram or fb because I dont want to lose that account now that the bunnies are gone.

I think some companies are using ancillary information, if they have it, rather than requiring more. Such as having payment information on file with them, and possibly your account being old enough to buy alcohol in its own right.

My account here is almost legal to buy alcohol!
 
I wonder if after a ban on children if they'll stop infantilizing us with the increasingly absurd censorship of words (which also includes "algospeak" where one uses other words instead of plain speak) and restrictions on seeing a "bad" video (like a music video which happened to me recently).
 
Recently, here in Oklahoma, Rep Chad Caldwell passed legislation in the House that would restrict social media accounts for youth under 16 and require parental consent for minors 16 and 17 years of age.

I don't have children so I'm not too invested in this issue, but I can see the argument. As an avoid listener of true crime podcasts, I can't tell you how many cases involve young women being murdered by much older men they met on social media platforms.
 
A social media ban for children is not the answer - it is actually running away from the answer. Children should be raised to treat the opinions of other people as data points rather than any reflection on themselves. They should be taught the stoic way of life where they do not internalize or engage with online critics. They should be taught to be suspicious of stalking or grooming behaviour because they don't magically become immune at age 16.
 
Its stupid to ban accounts anyway cos you can still see reddit, youtube and insta without an account and I am SURE they had a study a few years back that only watching and never contributing to social media is what drives more mental illness in kids anyway.

I cannot say that I am suffering without reddit. Its fine and maybe if I get banned from anything else, I will just accept that too. Except for instagram. I dont want to lose my bunnies on instagram. I love my bunny feed.

It's amazing how our governments, the body who we elect to represent us, is so out of touch of what their job is really suppose to be and why they were elected.

As Moptop said banning children is a good idea, thinking about it, it is a bloody good thing to ban younger kids from the social media sites. There were so many kids who would get bullied on those sites in previous times. Many kids might even be the target of paedophiles. To save the kids we need to be forthright. If you don't want to protect the kids, well!

Banning children is not such a bad idea, China banned families from having more than one child until a few years back. There is a population of 10 million/ (billion?) or so which is about 8 Million (billion?) or so to many on this planet. If there was only the fewer number would there be any atmospheric crisis or islands of plastic in the oceans. Would the cities have massed toxic breathing problems for its residents. We might even enjoy living on this planet.
Many years ago when computers and robotics began to take peoples jobs, the governments declared less people would be needed on earth so what did every prized 'persons' in politics do? Give people money to look after every new kids thereby ruining the planet, each generation of politician has continued to make this world a more dangerous place to live. Now we are faced with the question of how long can the world survive? And the politicians still keep promoting new ways to kill the world expecting us to keep voting for them..

Theres grandpa again but in the 70/80's you really talked to someone and must an usual phone to get in touch with your friends, and visited them daily, social media is easy but dont contribute to interaction( my opinion) but is so handy..
 
In the 70's/ 80's there was no internet, so the terminology of social media didn't exist.

ARPANET, created 1969. Bulletin boards, around since the late 70s. Usenet, created in 1980.

Okay, I'm just nitpicking... 😀 I doubt many would have been using them at the time.
 
As per the original thread by November, I still stick by the idea that kids should have 'brick' phones.

I don't know what things are like in school - do teachers discuss social media and how to navigate it responsibly? If not, it definitely should be discussed. And not just as a once-off.

Obviously, parenting shouldn't be solely left to teachers, so parent(s) need to step up.

Let's face it though, it's not only the younger generation affected. Social media (not forums, talking of the 'big guns' in that sphere) is rotting everyone's brains in some shape or form.
 
It's a good 20 years too late, these bans should have come in back in the 2000s to have any actual impact.
 
Back then, I doubt people making laws had the remotest clue as to how social media would evolve. Or, possibly, what the internet was.

The Internet was huge already by the mid 2000s, and teens were definitely already addicted by then.

It was definitely not as bad as it was before. And even then it was MySpace and forums mainly. No actual short form content which is what most people think is ‘social media’.
