Reboot canceled likely too woke?

What's your thoughts on Pulaski ?
As it's not relevant to the actual thread I'll keep it short.

I actually liked Dr. Pulaski. That said, I preferred Dr. Crusher (at least on ST: NG), and show wasn't big enough for the two of them. So I'm glad Dr. Crusher came back, and wish the actress who played Dr. Pulaski well.

EDITED: still on Star Trek, but I'm sure is applicable to Buffy the Vampire Slayer as well if people blame Buffy fans of being bigoted sexists and thus the show cancelled before it began. I just read an article that called "so-called" fans of Star Trek bigots and sexists for not liking Star Trek Academy. That's rage bait. Do they really believe it? People who loved what Star Trek used to be which was diverse and had some strong female characters (not to be confused with man-hating girl bosses) are bigoted sexists? I feel gaslighted.

Re: Pulaski; Pulaski doesn't hold a candle to Doctor Crusher.

A candle. I'll show myself out.

Be careful of any candles you get from Doctor Crusher. Now I'll show myself out.
To be frank the whole issue with Trek is Kurtzman. The show could be about anything or anyone and it would fail because he is running it. I'm just amazed that Paramount allowed him to run there IP franchise into the ground for 10 years... why ? What do they see in him ?

Is anyone aware of any nits that need picking,
'cos
in the title, 'Buffy reboot cancelled what does the word woke refer to?
because as far as I am aware woke is a past term of the word wake.

In this sense:

Someone who is woke is very aware of social and political unfairness. (Collins)
Having or marked by an active awareness of systemic injustices and prejudices, especially those involving the treatment of ethnic, racial, or sexual minorities. (Dictionary.com)

However, the actual defined meaning has been distorted a lot.

Star Trek '09 and Into Darkness made a lot of money and expanded the audience to the general movie going audience. CBS wanted that for their TV shows. And he gave that to them. He's not wrong, it's the audience that's wrong for not wanting it. Ratings don't matter, foreign distribution rights do.

Sarah did say that wasn't the actual script but idk, if this is 'woke' than you must be 50 plus. I will say that the performative feminism is tiring and not empowering; it's just cringey. You can tell they just went for a cute lil 'i'm a feminist' moment instead of actually just giving us Buffy Summers. She literally only has a short cameo at the end.

No one seems to have mentioned about the new slayers being Buffy's daughter.
I seem to remember some folk saying that the new slayer was chosen by the PTB.
Regardless of that how many were brought about by Willow and who killed them all?

There were always a few issues I personally had with a reboot, and the 'woke' thing isn't necessarily one of them:

* BTVS and Angel (and to a lesser extent Whedon's other shows) were so distinctive by their use of meta humour that any attempt to fit into a very different landscape would make it feel drab by comparison - how could any show make such a monumental impact a second time? Would it follow rather than lead?

* The Charmed reboot indicated the issues around a project going ahead without the blessing of the original cast (who for once didn't keep quiet and piled onto it), the passing of 3 of the original actors reduces the fan service appeal from them making cameos - always a major requirement for a relaunch. Equally, look at the Dallas sequel - once the late Larry Hagman had needed to be written out, the soul of the show had gone

* A show's ending is vital to its ongoing legend, and whilst s7 was badly flawed the concluding episode was superb, reinforcing what the show was about and feeling like a well-earned triumphant moment, Buffy standing at the crossroads of the normal life she'd wanted. The final scenes of Return Of The Jedi were the perfect conclusion for Star Wars, which now just flounders in a sea of generic content to keep the money rolling in. Look at Blake's 7: whilst there has been the odd extra bit of stuff, as far as most of the public are concerned it finished in a blaze of gunfire

* Joss Whedon...?

* Joss Whedon...?

I was so mindblowingly happy he did not stink up the place. Besides his bad behavior with the actresses, his latest projects just were not all that good. I watched The Nevers, and, outside of the dialogue, nothing stood out. And the dialogue seemed to be Whedon from the aughts.

So..... really ecstatic Whedon didn't participate.

To be frank this was always destined to fail, even if all the bad stuff hadn't happened. These reboots marketed as sequels never do succed .
Now would it have been better than what's shown. Yes it probably would. These writers are basically trying to copy Joss Whedon without being him so at best it was always going to be a pale imitation. But all that aside some of his post Buffy stuff such as Dollhouse and Buffy Season 8 and the Nevers (though I never bothered to try it) are all pretty awful

Re: Joss; Joss today might be valuable in a advisory/mentor role, much like Matt Groening was on the Simpsons, like, he attends writer's meetings, advises the producers, writes or directs occasionally, but is definitely not the one running things. But that's Joss today, not Joss '98, he's not that.

Yep. I so wanted to like Dollhouse, but there's so much wrong with it - Apart from Enver Gjokaj's versatile talent (his impersonation of Fran Kranz is jaw-dropping), I found Eliza just couldn't pull off what would have been all but impossible in playing a different protagonist in just about every episode, the attempt to use different timescales (Fringe-style) didn't work, Amy Acker seemed underused and too many ideas were piled into it at once.

I've seen some of Firefly and I saw the movie, and I just get the impression that Joss's humour doesn't always work in a dystopian sci-fi setting!

Joss Whedon should stick to fantasy to be honest. The best thing he's done since Buffy is Cabin in the Woods. His style of metaphor and horror and intense emotional content just fits that better.

I think it's a problem with modern writers that they think they have to be versatile and do lots of different things and often, no they don't. JK Rowling is like that with her crime fiction that didn't really hold up from what I'm told, and similarly Joss Whedon has tried all these different kinds of things and none were as good as Buffy. Ray Harryhausen meanwhile knew that fantasy and monsters were his bread and butter, and so didn't try and do the great love story, or a gritty crime thriller LOL.

Of course if you can do more, by all means, but yeah for me Joss was really more of a horror writer and should have stuck to that.

The first few episodes of any series can be tough. The show is still finding its way and it can be hard to grab a viewer because of that.

Agents of SHIELD is decent though. A non-writer example of doing what you're best at is David Boreanaz; Angelus showed that he could act but overall he's stuck to the roles he does best.

I didn't make it past the first few episodes of Shield I'm afraid. Maybe I didn't give it a chance. I heard it was mostly his brother though.

This is pretty subjective. Personally, I think Dollhouse and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. are his best projects. While S.H.I.E.L.D does have several different writers (including Jed Whedon and Mo Tancharoen, who also teamed up with him on other Whedon projects) Joss' influence is obvious throughout the series.

Well..... ALL of our posts are pretty subjective. That is why we have the ship wars where EVERYBODY involved thinks they are correct. That is why Angel v Spike regarding anything is still the most popular thread topics on any board. That is why we all come back for more, year in and year out!!! 😃

The alternative is a total lack of passion where everything is just "Yeah, okay."

His "Much Ado About Nothing" from 2012 is surprisingly good. I don't normally like the modern retellings, but his worked well.
