Patrick Stewart has Died Age 86

I agree, not just the best Captain but the best actor on any of the Trek shows.
Like I said, given how awful the first 2 TNG seasons were, I don't see them carrying on if not him.

Ian Mckellans tribute to Patrick Stewart, a friend who he'd known for decades long before X-Men, is moving.

Picard was a cultured man of learning and desire to explore whereas Kirk was more Roddenburys fantasy. He'd beam down to a planet beat up a bad guy then gave sex with the woman. And if you look at Picard as he was originally conceived, he was a joke complete with French stereotypes. Riker was meant to be the Hero. It was Patrick who changed that simply from his peformance so it was about Picard and into a great Captain.
Thats probably one of the reasons the TNG movies didn't work, they tried to turn him into an action hero and that just wasn't Picard
I am not surprised that Ian McKellan would have a powerful tribute. They shared a generation of change and a lot of great work. We are so fortunate to be part of the generations who've enjoyed their work.

Thanks to Sir Patrick, Picard was never a joke, never an idiot playboy (I love the original series, but the sexual politics still bugs me) and never a stuck up or otherwise arrogant 'prince' which could easily have occurred, given the basic outline of the character... he could have played an uptight, prissy authoritarian martinet. Instead, he had grace, a lot of power... and empathy and intelligence - both emotional and tactical. Occasionally, he was even funny. He was a proper gentleman... in the best ways of being a gentlemen. He embodies (always will) one of my two favourite captains -- the other is Avery Brooks as Benjamin Sisko.
