Do you have other ships you're passionate about?
Did you notice some similarities between your other ships and Bangel?

I ship Emily and Aiden from the show ''Revenge'' (such a guilty pleasure 🙂).
I consider them soul mates, just like Buffy and Angel. Emily and Aiden both seek revenge and are willing to go very far to get what they want. They understand each other like no other and can only truly be themselves with each other as well. Oh and just like Bangel, they also have a bisexual friend that ships them together 😛

Superficial similarities: blond girl and guy with brown hair 😀 Oh and they both look good together!

Aside from the "we can't put them together or it will end the story trope" I didn't see any similarities as you can see my other ships are pretty mundane life stories. Very relatable to me personally? Buffy and Angel are greater than life characters to me so their story feels bigger, they operate a different space all together.

I used to ship a lot of different couples on Grey's anatomy, but Shonda literally killed all my dreams so I don't even bother shipping for that show anymore. I just watch for the drama. But back in the day, Mer/Der was like my main ship.

I don't know why my gifs and pictures didn't post 🙁

So many potential new ships! Thank you :)
But back in the day, Mer/Der was like my main ship.

I was pretty heavily invested in Mer/Der too. I should have included them. In terms of intensity that might be the closest ship to Bangel in the sense that I always felt like they were soulmates. Drawn together against all odds. But I like the stuff up to post it after post it I was luke warm on them. She could be so mean sometimes lol.

I feel the same ^^
I just watched a mer/der fan vid prompted by this thread. Love this quote:

"I believe we can be extraordinary together rather than ordinary apart."

You know who else is extraordinary together????? Bangel. 😉

If there was a love button, this would be the time I would use it!
Elizabeth/Darcy. Tall, dark, and handsome man with hilariously bad social skills loves his lady with an intensity he doesn't know how to handle, and he becomes a better person because of her influence? Check. That seems to be about where the similarities end, though.

Damon/Elena. Human girl, vampire guy. She inspires him to become a better person, and he loves her with his whole being but doesn't push it because he's convinced he's bad for her. (Once I saw a thing that described Damon/Elena as being like a Buffy/Spike-type relationship done right, while Buffy/Angel is a way better version of Stefan/Elena. I agree wholeheartedly, and I also think that Stefan/Caroline is Cordy/Angel done right. I think the main sources of the differences are that Damon, unlike Spike, does not feel entitled to anything, and Stefan, unlike Angel, tends to be a self-righteous hypocrite. But the whole show is a mess of ridiculous drama and gross irresponsibility, and the characters all deserved better treatment than what they got at the hands of their writers.)

Han/Leia. Kinda feel like it would be stretching to make comparisons here, but RotJ Han, at least, is Angel-like in letting Leia set the pace. And when she rescues him from Jabba's palace, it's very "What's My Line: Part II."

Belle/Beast. They're a lot like Elizabeth/Darcy, and thus are similar to Buffy/Angel in the same ways.

Margaret/Thornton. I think their personalities are a lot like Buffy and Angel's.

Zuko/Katara. More like Damon/Elena than Buffy/Angel, and bafflingly not canon, which I think is because the show creators saw themselves as Aang and childishly refused to let go of the idea of the kid they identified with getting the girl, even though he was FREAKING TWELVE and thus not in need of a relationship any time soon, and Zuko/Katara would've been amazing. Such a missed opportunity, and the canon route felt so forced.

Amy/Rory. He kept loving her even after a ridiculously long time apart, like Angel after hell.

Rick/Evy. I don't even care that the sequel is ridiculous, because it is led by these badass marrieds, who are exactly what I want out of every couple in a sequel. So many sequels begin with the couple that got together in the first installment fighting and/or separated so that the romance arc can essentially be recycled, but there's none of that nonsense in The Mummy Returns, thank you. They're still in love, still a seamless team, and a mighty force to be reckoned with. I love that the *point* of this movie is that their kind of love is vastly superior to the selfish bullcrap of Imhotep/Anck Su Namun. This is what I wish Buffy/Angel had been allowed to become.

I'm really not sure what the through line is in my favorite ships, unless it's just compelling characters with good arcs and oodles of chemistry.

Love the Rick/Evy mention :)
Ten/Rose were clearly BASED ON Bangel, given the characters themselves were even based on those characters. Rose and Jenny the Doctor's Daughter were both based on Buffy and admittedly so. While the Doctor has been around since 1963, RTD's take on him was with a heavy dose of immortal romance trope angst, genocide-level guilt and a tendency to make very dark decisions and actions that he ultimately pays for tenfold with a tragic hero's ending. Like Angel, the Doctor has a tendency sometimes to make very harsh head-over-heart decisions for others.

If the ASH casting, the school setting and the "shooty dog thing" Buffyspeak homage didn't make it a giant 'duh' in School Reunion, this scene certainly did (it's practically ripped right out of the Mayor's speech in Choices and all of Angel's future speeches):

Rose: How many of us have there been traveling with you?
Doctor: Does it matter?
Rose: Yeah, it does, if I'm just the latest in a long line.
Doctor: As opposed to what?
Rose: I thought you and me were... I obviously got it wrong. I've been to the year five billion, right, but this? Now, this is really seeing the future. You just leave us behind. Is that what you're going to do to me?
Doctor: No. Not to you.
Rose: But Sarah Jane? You were that close to her once, and now, you never even mention her. Why not?
Doctor: I don't age. I regenerate. But humans decay. You wither and you die. Imagine watching that happen to someone you...
Rose: What, Doctor?
Doctor: You can spend the rest of your life with me, but I can't spend the rest of mine with you. I have to live on. Alone. That's the curse of the Time Lords.

Then we have the scenes of the Doctor choosing to leave Rose behind twice (the scene where he sticks the dimension jumper on her, followed by a confrontation about her never seeing her own mother again, and then when he drops off Rose and his part-human Metacrisis self in Pete's World) so she can live out a normal life in another universe with her family. Angel's also known for expressing the unfairness of a mortal/immortal relationship that can never be several times and making decisions by himself to do what he thinks is best for another, but also knowing that he will always end up alone (The Prom and I Will Remember You). In both cases, the immortal is quite upfront about any possible relationship with them being impossible due to unequal lifespans, an insurmountable species difference perceived as wrong (both bothering the non-human far more), lack of a human future if one chooses to be with them and all that entails, belief that they're ultimately doomed to be alone and having a higher calling than the nice dream of playing at being a normal human for a little while (Human Nature is the Doctor's I Will Remember You). Both of them are ultimately the ones that break it off, even if the girl desperately wants to ignore all the reasons they can't be together. The Time War pretty much gave the Doctor a guilt complex nearly on par with Angel's, though Moffat undid it.

The character of Jack (going as far as to cast James Marsters alongside as a rival), despite the wildly different personality, and the spinoff formula is also heavily inspired by Angel in other ways. RTD was always quite upfront with his inspirations from the Jossverse.

(Sorry about the audio problem on the second one, but the visuals are still comparative.)

Wow I never knew they were inspired by Bangel! I might give it a chance now. The videos were so well done. Too bad stupid youtube had to remove the audio for the second one :(

Elizabeth Bennett and Mr Darcy, though only book and BBC version. Can't be bothered with any other iterations of the story because, I mean...

Who could compete?

Otherwise, I have fairly easy to ship but also to grow tired of ships so, I can't think of any that I'm really passionate about at the moment.

Oh actually, correction. Nathan and Haley, love them, they were the only reason I watched One Tree Hill ever. Lol. Pretty much hated everyone else.

God no! I can't stand R& R. They're just too much! I just did not care about them by the end.

I must say Zuko/Katara are more like Spike/Buffy IMO with the whole he-spends-years-trying-to-kill-them-then-turns-good arc, but done well. (Also works because Zuko was human and not actually evil). They would have been great together, but for some reason I didn't really mind Aang/Katara, even though he was only 12 *shrug*.I guess it's because I always knew they were going to go that way. I loved Zuko/Mai though - she was so fantastically gloomy! They were the Spike/Dru of Avatar.

Zuko is my other all-time favorite character next to Angel. Absolutely the best redemption arc in fiction, and from a Y7 cartoon! Zuko/Katara might be Buffy/Spike-esque in a general sense, but Zuko and Spike are not at all similar. Zuko is a very kind, good kid who was abused, neglected, and despised by his father *for having those qualities* instead of being ruthless and power-hungry like Azula, and he grew to believe that he needed to exise those parts of himself if he was ever going to be worth anything. His arc isn't just a redemption arc, it's a "triumph over abuse" arc. Few moments in fiction are as satisfying as his confrontation with Ozai during the eclipse.

I love Zuko/Mai too and don't hate Aang/Katara (mostly because if they didn't happen, then Tenzin and his kids wouldn't have, and they are easily the best things about Korra), but I'm rather annoyed that the writers went that route instead of the obviously more compelling one. It just felt like there were moments in the show where the writing was forced instead of character-driven, which is a huge disservice to such brilliantly developed characters.

I agree. Zuko's whole journey was just fantastic! His social awkwardness is closer to Angel's too. But the Zuko/Azula/Katara fight tops Zuko/Ozai any day for me - it was incredible!

Tenzin and his kids wouldn't have, and they are easily the best things about Korra
YES! Tenzin and family were one of the things that kept me watching.

But ...but they were on a break! 😛

Basically him trying to blame it on her. Jealous, possessive, horrible guy. Lol. Sorry for dumping all over it. I liked them once upon a time when I watched Friends but since I've just come to see him less and less favorably.

I couldn't ship Doctor/Rose but definitely see some of the similarities to Bangel.

But they made it so she needed him to be a hero instead of solely being inspired by him (the way Angel felt about Buffy) and learning how to be a hero on her own. Without the Doctor, Rose acted as if she would have to go back to being a shopgirl. Even when she was literally in another universe, her main action was trying to get back to the Doctor and then was given a human version of him.

I liked that Buffy & Clara had their own lives and journeys that Angel & the Doctor were there for a lot of the beginning of but weren't the complete brunt of it. Buffy was the Slayer and Clara was already going to travel the world (only delayed because her friend died the week she was visiting with her and decided to stay to help the woman's family as they mourned) and already had her teaching degree before meeting him.

I liked that in the dream sequence in Last Christmas elderly Clara said she had lots of marriage proposals and learned to fly a plane and taught in every country in Europe. While Buffy isn't above the work, I think had she never become the Slayer, she probably wouldn't be working service industry (she keeps choosing that because she needs a flexible schedule for slayage, has a criminal record from slayer related activities, and has PTSD). It was the opposite with Rose (who grew up lower middle class).

Buffy's problems started when she began saving the world, when she was "normal" she was headed for a good life with more opportunities. Rose made it one semester of college because she didn't like it while Buffy loved college and only left because her life as the Slayer intervened. I think Danny was what Riley could've been while Rose's relationship with Mickey seemed like what Xander accused Buffy of treating Riley like. In the BtVS movie (which the prequel comic The Origin was inspired by), Buffy put "travel Europe" as one of her life goals. So I think even if she hadn't of met Angel or become the Slayer, she would've had an interesting life.

And Rose thought she was the *first* girl The Doctor ever fancied/traveled with. He was 900 years old. Buffy may get jealous but she never assumed she was his first. "Do you snore?" (code for the question she wanted to know which he answered, it's been a long time since) "Come on, Angel. You've been dating 200 years and you don't know what it means when a girl says maybe she'll show."

Destiel and MerDer are so Bangel and Dean Winchester & Meredith Grey have a lot in common with Buffy Summers. Lots of posts on them in the future.

This is a bit embarrassing but one of my biggest OTPs is... Finn/Rachel from Glee and while BtVS and Glee are such different types of shows and the characters are very different, there's some weird similarities between the 2 ships :

-Their first kiss gets interrupted because they guy got "excited", though in different ways lol

-The guy is inspired by the girl and he then finds meaning to his life

-The guy breaks up with the girl so she can have the life she deserves

-And of course the height difference... though that one is superficial

My other big OTP is Nicky/Lorna from OITNB but they're not at all like Buffy/Angel.

<quote>crazysoulless: I loved Finn/Rachel. 🙁
dcai0830: Aww Finchel... I liked them. Such a sad turn of events. I couldn't watch after he passed it was too sad. </quote>

I kept watching but it's definitely the worst experience I've ever had as a fan, especially given my love for Cory Monteith who remains my favorite celebrity.

I think I decided to adopt a more chill attitude when it comes to television after because I was way too invested in those characters and that ship.

But I'm really glad that you guys both loved them. It's the kind of ship (and show) that people often roll their eyes at.
