Buffy: "You think I came all this way to get knocked up by some demon dust? I can't fight this. I know that now. But you guys? You're just men. Just the men who did this... to her. Whoever that girl was before she was the First Slayer."
Shadow Man: "You don't understand."
Buffy: "No, you don't understand! You violated that girl, made her kill for you because you're weak, you're pathetic, and you obviously have nothing to show me."

Maybe it is just me, but I strongly think the Watcher Council sucks. That little "test" they do when a slayer is 18 is basically so they can kill the slayer and get a new one so they can turn her into their gun. The gun they can point at monsters and shoot because they are cowards.

I don't know. I think it's a good thing they are doing. If not for the Watcher's Council these "guns" would run around hearing voices, having flashbacks and not having a clue as to what was going on. At least the Watcher's Council keeps them out of jail or a mental hospital- where they would surely be otherwise, providing a vampire didn't get to them first.

I think the Watcher's Council is a necessary evil. But that cruciamentum test is totally bullshit. What was the point of that test? Why submit a girl to a suicide mission to fight a vampire without any weapons and without her powers? What would they think would happen? It's just so f*cking awful.

The test just proves me what a outdated setup the Watchers Council are. Even if they could somehow justify the test for Buffy, what happens to Joyce highlights why it is just a crazy idea.

The Council wanted Buffy dead. Because they couldn't control her. They would have likely done the same to Faith. Why have a weapon if you can't control it properly.

Don't think they wanted her dead at that point. It was only later when they found out about her and Giles not following the strict Council code. It was just a sick test that they'd been doing for ages.

The perfect opportunity to get rid of slayers who were getting older and starting to question the Council's ways.

I believe Nikki Wood was older than Buffy plus she had a kid. I don't think it was just for slayers getting older and questioning.

I'm no fan of the Watcher's Council either, they mostly seem to want control, but at the same time - what is the alternative? I mean, they do have their eyes on the bigger picture (as we can see with Wes and Giles sometimes, that it's basically ingrained in them) and it can seem callous, but they are trying to make sure the world is/stays safe after all. I guess sometimes that means, terrible as it sounds, taking out or neutralizing a weak spot. The cruciamentum seems cruel of course, and dated, but it was probably created in a time when life was much harder and it seemed like a reasonable thing to do. So I don't think of them so much as cowards but rather as pragmatists.

The men from Get it done however... seems like the reason they picked a girl was because they knew they'd be able to control a girl more easily than a boy, or maybe I'm assuming here. They were cowardly, as they forced the first Slayer into it, but...

Buffy: "No, you don't understand! You violated that girl, made her kill for you because you're weak, you're pathetic, and you obviously have nothing to show me."

Buffy saying that makes it hard to accept that after this, and after 7 years of moaning about the burdens of being a Slayer, that she would share her power in a moment "girl power". Sure, she asks like a dozen girls if they want it and they say yes, but the rest? In essence she violates a whole bunch of girls/potentials who might never have been Slayers, and could've lived normal lives, because she needed a bunch of potentials to kill for her.

By now, Buffy herself knows it's all about the mission - violating one girl with more demon power or forcing it upon a multitude - what's the difference? Except that Buffy, with the Shadow Men, at least had a chance to say no. She didn't give that chance to the rest, but treated Slayerhood as it was a 'gift' rather. Basically, Buffy at the end of season 7 was becoming the Council herself, so I don't think we should judge them too harshly for being sucky, the ones with control are always kind of sucky. Though some of their rituals (like the Cruciamentum) were certainly due for an update.
🙂

I also get the impression from Wesley that Watchers have to go through something similar; kill a vampire in a controlled environment to 'prove' their worth. It wasn't just a slayer-thing.

I think you are assuming. According to canon after they 'made' her, they just let her wander around killing vampires. It was only after people were afraid of her that they actually tried to control her, but then it was too late. She basically was Frankenstein. So they didn't make her to control her, it was more or less the opposite. Which, in my eyes, is actually worse.

My meant assumption wasn't about them wanting to control the First Slayer's every move but about the instituion of the Slayer always being a girl in general. There's a reason it is gender-bound.

IT might have been me misremembering. I dunno. Somewhere I thought it was a mistake. I've read some of the comics but don't really remember them that well.

Oh. I think, from what I recall, that part was an accident. I thought she was only supposed to be a one-off. It thought it was only when the demon jumped to another girl that formed the watcher council. I always thought she was supposed to be the one, period. But I could be wrong. I think it was in one of the comics that the line was a mistake or something. That's why the first we Shadow Men and not Watchers.

Ooh ok, I might've misunderstood. I thought the line was intended
I wonder if the Avatar from Avatar the Last Airbender and Legend of Korra was based off the Slayers. Every time the Avatar dies another is chosen. Except it could be boy or girl.
