M9: Week 1: Pages 1 to 50

I haven't gotten the full 50 pages just, just abut 25, but it is a pretty good start. Nice set up with the whole crew, a bit of a re-introduction to their personalities and relationships, and setting up that the conflict of the book will relate to Jayne's past. Maybe obvious from the cover, but still makes me pleased. It'll be fun to see a bit more of Jayne.
Felt like maybe the writer was pushing it when he wrote that Mal "liked Jayne", which I think he does... in a manner, but it is also debatable whether he does or not.

It seems pretty obvious at the moment that this is another retelling of The Seven Samurai IN SPACE! though probably descended more from The Magnificent Seven. Which of those two films is admittedly the one I have seen 😀. But with two more people and rather less death on the Magnificent side.
Yes, it is to do with Jayne's past, though the description of PastJayne as someone who always fulfils his agreements seems to be at odds with the current one as seen in the series so far, given he literally joined the crew by breaking an existing agreement.
And the blast from the past is an old beau and business partner of Jayne's, for whom he has strongly mixed feelings.
And the final reveal of the section is that this woman has a teenage daughter called Jane. Is Jayne the father?

Seven Samurai has a poor town being plagued by bandits decide to hire a small group of mercenaries - seven ronin in this case, seven gunfighters for The Magnificent Seven - to defend their town, but can't really afford to pay them. There are more examples - Battle Beyond the Stars is another I have seen - in which a small group of, usually but not always seven, people are hired to deal with a problem.

Finished this section, and Temperance kinda has a bit of a Saffron style to her.
I liked that Inara was the one to talk to Mal, a bit of calm persuasion.

I also liked that Inara was the one to talk to Mal. I thought the section was a bit slow though, but the writer does do a fair job at finding everyone's voices. In book format you realize how big the crew is.
A girl named Jane, eh. Why do I figure she is the one that never belonged to Jayne but should be treated as though she was?
I can't quite imagine a young Jayne. As the book describes his and Temperance's relationship, I guess it makes sense, but I still can't really picture it
