Jenny Calendar deserved better?

Jenny Calendar deserved to live; which is why I accept her death.

Jenny was such a great character. She was so lovable in season one and you find yourself conflicted with her choices in season two. You can tell she genuinely cared for Buffy (and Giles), but she also put everyone in danger by keeping secrets.

Jenny offered a strong adult female presence that Buffy could learn from; as there were things Joyce simply could never understand.

I also imagine Willow and Jenny becoming a power duo that we need. Dark Willow may never have happened. Dark Jenny?

But these are reasons why I accept her death. It makes you feel something, that she had so much more to do (even considering the rest of the series and how she could have fit in).

You see Angel come closer to harming the Scoobies with her death. I find it hard to believe that she was necessary for Buffy’s development alone, but Buffy could no longer defend keeping Angel alive to Giles or to Willow, Xander, and Cordelia.

Second, I agree with the assertion that she “deserved” better. It makes her death more tragic, since her life was cut short and we (the audience) know that she had plans and options for her long after her death.

However, a part of me does sort of wish they kept her alive. Maybe Angelus puts her in a coma or something, which explains why she can’t do the spell and also gives a ton of emotional weight and trauma to everyone else. Have her come back later to try and mentor Willow in S6, only to fail? I dunno, but there definitely was a lot to do with her. Even moving her to Angel would’ve been a great choice

I agree that more could have been done with Jenny. But I do think her death had so much more impact because she was a good character and had potential. I don't think the death of anyone else, outside of the Scoobies, would have been so shocking.

At first my feelings were no because the episode when Ethan returns and he and Giles have the tattoo/ Mark of Igon Jenny is put in jeopardy. By episode's end she rejects Giles.I totally understand her reaction and feeling that way, and then her actions toward Giles in Ted? I believe she knew what she signed up for and going into a relationship with and helping Giles. Then yes she deserved better, she could have been around longer in the series.

Old Passions is IMHO, the best conventional episode of the entire series. I think Jenny's death was a crucial part of that greatness, and, while I think the character had more stories in her, none of them would come close to Passions. So, I am fine with her death.

P.S. I tried searching for Passions, baseball bat, Giles. This is what I got.

The only thing that would have made Jenny's death better is that if Angel made her a vampire and Mr. Giles went home all unexpecting and then wham! VampJenny attacks him and he is bawling his little English eyes out as he's forced to stake her. That would have been awesome.

One proverb form the land of my paternal grandparents (Sicily) is:

"If you wish revenge, begin by digging two graves." The idea is, one for your target and one for yourself. Sicilians invented the word "vendetta" because words are invented for things you run into frequently. Sort of like the Hatfields and the McCoys in America, revenge has its consequences.

It felt right for Jenny's story to end at that point.

Nobody and everybody deserves better - its how death is - some people bravely die fighting for their country and others trip over a shoelace and drown in a puddle.
