SO vamps can't come in somoene's house without an invitation from someone who lives there. but they are able to get into public places without being invited correct? just wondering because I'm rewatching family from season 5 and spike just walks into the magic shop without an invitation. was it an error or are vampires allowed to enter any public place? sorry if it's a stupid question.
 
They can go into public places; thats why they can enter the high school without an invite. As opposed to the Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie in which they needed to be invited in for public places as well.
 
Yes, correct. Vampires can enter a commercial / non-residential place without invitation. They just can't enter a personal dwelling, so a house or a flat. They can enter the non-residential areas of a block of flats, like the corridor, but not the flat itself.

So The Magic Box is fine for him to come and go without invitation, but if there was a flat upstairs he'd need to be invited into that.
 
And they can enter another vampire's lair - they don't need Wesley, who doesn't even live there, to issues and invite.😀
I love that scene.
 
yeah I've always wondered about that. Why vamps can enter other vamps crypts and such.

Darwinism in action - you have to be able to protect the food supply by killing off the competition. Otherwise there would be no humans left.

Sorry - it's a scene in Angel (Somnabulist) when Wesley was still a dork.

Cut to Angel and Wesley entering Penn’s Hotel room. Wesley jumps in with a stake in his hand while Angel just walks in.
Wesley: “Oh, I invite you in.”
Angel: “Relax. That’s only for humans. Breaking and entering another vampire’s lair isn’t a problem.”
Wesley: “Oh. Right.

Since Wesley didn't live there, he couldn't have invited Angel in, anyway. He was a cute dork, classic Wesley.
 
This brings up another question. What happens if a vampire goes into a vacant house just before dawn, intending to stay hidden there until sunset, and someone moves in during the day? Is the vamp instantly ejected out into the burning hot sunlight, or is he trapped there until the homeowner gives him permission to leave?

Yep, everyone is right. A vampire cannot enter a human residence without an invite. They can however enter vampire and demon lairs. Even part demons (like Billy) don't have to invite a vampire in.

The inviter must be a resident but not necessarily the owner.

In the case of Angel not being able to enter Fred's room: because the hotel was not open for business as a hotel, it wasn't classed as public accommodation. Also Angel didn't own the hotel. Russel Winters however was able to enter Tina's apartment, because he owned the building.
 
So now we've cleared up the original question I have a follow up. What's up with that? Seems a very odd rule for vampires to be bound by. Do we reckon it's a result of ancient magic? Maybe the Shadowmen through something together while they were making a slayer?
 
I just want to add something: in S9, when the Earth had lost all magic, the zompires were able to enter homes without invitation. Then, someone (Anaheed or Billy) remembered that in the old times, when humans had no homes, vampires were kept away by using fire.
