Does anyone know if it's true Brendon was reprimanded for working out?

When I got back into Buffy a few years ago for the 25th anniversary, I was told that, to better fit his character doing construction in the later seasons, Brendon began to actually work out IRL. He was then given a bunch of crap by Whedon or someone for doing so.

Does anyone know if this is true or have a verified source? I always just kind of believed it because we know about Charisma's mistreatment on ATS for being pregnant. If they would go after her and punish her for that, I can easily believe they'd go after Nick as well. But it occurs to me I've never seen a source on this beyond forum posts.

Any help be appreciated.

I heard the opposite actually - that Joss told Nick to stop working out. I'm guessing he did this because he didn't want Nick to look "too good" and overshadow the other male characters? It would be interesting to know the truth.
