Couples that never were

Willow and Angel - idk why, I think it would have been interesting
Spike and Tara - definite chemistry as seen from the movie Benson did with him
Anya and Giles - the kiss between them was just tooo perfect
Darla and Spike - because they're both crafty and like it their own way
Giles and Drusilla - for some reason, i could just see it, and she could possibly reform

I like Dru and Giles. Both are smart and mystical. And they eould not bore each other.

Anya and Giles for the same reason + chemistry. I suspect Anya might irritate Giles at times but he might have an easier time helping her integrate into modern life.

Darla before her pregnancy is too cold and transactional for Spike (who is very sentimental and emotion driven) After giving birth... She is dead.

I think Spike has chemistry with everyone. I dont see relationship fit between Spike and Tara's characters. They read like siblings. (With Tara elder sistery, oddly). James and Amber may welk have sexual chemistry as different characters.

Angel is manipulative and ruthless. Willow is manipulative but too weak to be truly ruthless though she is ruthless enough when she wants something, she is very lacking in confidence which is part of why she is underhand and misuses power. They are similar enough but that may lead to clashes. I think her whininess would irritate Angel.

Giles would forever be removing his glasses and pinching the bridge of his nose. 🤣
lollll

IDK, I feel the scene where Tara was bugging Spike about his "cramp" was delightful and even there you could see how well they played off of each other. He brought out a different side of Tara, she was quite confident around him. I feel she might have shown different facets of her self.

Spike likes a challenge and I think Darla was indeed quite cold, but I feel for some reason they'd have scorching chemistry if it was allowed to play out. Opposites attract. Darla had a soft side at times as well.

Anya would def. annoy Giles but it would be charming. He was oddly protective of her I always felt.

You're right about Willow and Angel and their manipulative sides, which is why it would have been interesting! I never thought of her as whiny, just lacking in self-confidence. I feel they would have challenged each other with the friction. But who knows, none of it will ever happen, it's very much the realm of fan fiction. To me Buffy and Angel were boring b.c. it was just too soppy lovey dovey when they were on - I enjoy couples where there's more tension and spats, I see that with Willow and Angel b.c. they'd keep each other on their toes.

Yeah, I have to agree. The only Darla who might have had a chance of working with Spike is the human one who discovered she was dying. That woman had humanity. Spike's entire existence is defined by emotion, specifically by love and passion. He tried to become what Cecily would have wanted. He became what Drusilla (and Angelus) wanted. He tried to be what he thought Buffy wanted. He is always motivated by the people he loves. He wouldn't be happy with someone like Darla. Say what you want about Drusilla (and it'll probably be true), but she was a passionate person.

I remember talking about this back when the show was still on, and I still hold the same opinion—vampires' personalities seem influenced by the dominant traits of who their hosts were while alive, though definitely twisted to something more evil. Angelus' whimsy and overindulgence is adapted from Liam's party animal nature, Spike's single-minded focus on love is the same as William's, Darla was a prostitute and still "sympathizes" with them (though it leads her to kill them), the Xander and Willow of The Wish are still inseparable, and so on. And, of course, in Dopplegangland, Angel confirms this indirectly, when Buffy claims that the personality of a vampire has nothing to do with how they were in life in an attempt to make Willow feel better about her doppleganger.

Angel is manipulative and ruthless.

I don't think I'd describe Angel as manipulative and ruthless, though he is certainly capable of being both at different times in his life (existence, whatever you want to call it when someone is immortal.) I wouldn't describe him that way, though, because I don't think he is those things most of the time. It gives an impression of him that I don't think is accurate. Now if we're talking about Angelus, then I would agree that those are appropriate adjectives to use.

I don't want to derail this thread from its original topic, but this is such an interesting theory, that believe it or not, has never occurred to me. you're totally spot on.
