Hi all,

I was wondering if you had any tv characters that are very beloved and popular but that you secretly (or non-secretly) hate. It can be from recent or older shows the only factor is that you can't understand why everyone is so head over heels for them. Here are my top 3:

1) Rory Gilmore- Gilmore girls: Honestly I never understood the appeal. At first I thought that I just couldn't identify to her bookish nature but know I think she just is a horrible person especially with the revival!

2) Sheldon Cooper - The Big bang theory: Yes I do think he is entertaining and I love the actor but really his sexism and rarism gets old after a bit. You can't always blame his quirky attitude for everything!

3) Ray Romano - Everybody loves Raymond: Except me I guess! I just can't stand a man child!

What are yours?

agreed on Ray & Sheldon. To be fair not a fan of Big Bore Theory

Oh SO much agree! My top 3
Beverly Hills 90210 : Kelly Taylor (Maybe I don't hate her, but I strongly dislike her plenty of times) she's an hypocrite, self centered, whiny, self righteous, judgemental.
But I don't know if that character is beloved, but I think in the 90's she was because to be the main character (with a lotttt of drama revolving around her until the S10) she has to be a beloved character.

Yeah she was she definitely qualifies!

I disliked Kelly in the beginning & the end but liked her in the middle.
Ray Romano - Everyone Hates Raymond
I'd agree with you about Ray Romano he really gets my back up, in fact he drags everyone else in the show down with him, the only people in the show who are okay are the kids.

There is a crap actress who everyone (in America) seemed to love all she had was her laugh and great actors to make her seem better, she was so great I can't remember her name. Then she made a racial slur on twitter and got dumped big time. What did she expect, the TV station she worked for was owned by Disney.

Oprah Winfrey
The other who I hated was Oprah Winfrey as in her TV show she brought out the best/worst in idiots, remember that freak of Scientology Tom Cruise doing his rant on a sofa, what an idiot.
Thing is she thought herself so big she could insult anyone or race and get away with it.

She's a bad interviewer.
Hmmm I don't know that these are all super popular characters but they do tend to be loved:
- Peyton from One Tree Hill just a shitty person
- Jerry from Seinfield not funny
- Walter White (and everyone really) from Breaking Bad no redeeming qualities, hypocrite, tedious
- Liz Lemon from 30 Rock not funny, overrated
- Rory and Lorelai Gilmore from Gilmore Girls (but I do still enjoy the show) both are really selfish and unaware of it
- Rachel Barry from Glee two-faced, vindictive, selfish yet everyone acts like shes a delicate flower
- Dawson from Dawson's Creek he's just the worst

ILLYRIAN
ILLYRIAN
What Dawson, how could you ? He deserves to interview the captain of the Titanic, in situ.

Yeah I love Peyton but she was a horrible person. And Rachel too!

I Don't think Peyton is really popular. I have watched OTH videos on Youtube and a lot of fans seem to prefer Brooke over Peyton (and of course Brucas over Leyton). But in other hand I don't know either if she is really hated . I only know that my sisters used to love her when they watched the show and they were Leyton fans blahhh 😛😛

Interesting, I've seen lots of people say that the show sucked after Peyton left so I just figured she was loved.

I was a Peyton fan because she was moody and loved music like me. But I never sleeped with my best friends boy sooooo
Strangely enough, just as I opened this thread Everybody Loves Raymond just came on the tele. He is a right spoilt brat but I always thought that was kind of the point of the character - that he is awful but because he fits into societies normalised role of a successful male people around him automatically 'love' him despite all his shitty qualities.

Everyone always loved Chuck Bass from Gossip Girl but I think he is disgusting.
Also, the Janitor from Scrubs bugged me. The characters were exaggerated forms of real-life characteristics found in people you know, but the Janitor wasn't.

Apparently Ed Westwick is a horrible person so we might see the downfall of Chuck too!
Could not agree more on Kelly Taylor from BH 90210 - why everyone else thinks Valerie is a worse person than Kelly baffles me; at least Val wears her bitchy on her sleeve, Kelly's bitchy is far more invisible and hard to catch. Sorry, I just hate her and I hate the fact that she's considered a good girl and good character.

Also, sorry, but I can't post something in this thread without mentioning... Buffy Summers. There it is. Hate is maybe too strong a word, but at times it is entirely appropriate. For the most part, I just really dislike her, disagree with most of her choices and find her an entirely impossible character to even remotely enjoy watching. S1 and S2 was the greatest, Buffy was an amazing character, and then S3 came and she just...it was like the original Buffy!Bot before S5's. Just...no...

That one's probably my biggest, but I also have my issues with Rachel Green, Robin Scherbatsky, and probably more if I gave it more thought 🙂

Ted Mosby from HIMYM, I don't think I've ever loathed a character the way I loathe him. He is so whiny and entitled.
He tells this whole story to his kids about their mom, except it was never really about their mom. It was just one big sob story of how he has always been in love with Robin and now he would like to date her again. Yuck!!!

Peyton from OTH. She is just an absolutely terrible person. She gets involved with her bestfriend's bf behind her back TWICE (meaning her bff dated the guy at 2 different times, and Peyton managed to make sure she kissed him both times.) Then she wanted to act like all should be forgiven. And she was just another whiny entitled person. I just couldn't stand herself pity. I just couldn't even try to sympathize with her when shitty things did happen to her since she was such a shit person.

Damon Salvatore. We get it he's hot. But he's a terrible person for most of the series. He also acts entitled to the main female character Elena, who happens to be dating her brother. Then when he can't have his brother's gf, he decides to snap his brother's gf's brother's neck. Yeah take that sentence in. He was just horrible until he finally got trapped in a world that didn't have Elena in it.

Agreed with the first and last, never saw the middle one. Thanks for naming Damon so I don't have to lol!
I actually used to really love both Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, it wasn't until the revival when my rose colored glasses fell off. Actually I started to dislike them a bit in season 7 of the show, because it always felt a bit off (original creators being gone), but now I can see their flaws more clearly throughout the whole series.

Also, yes, love seeing other people dislike Kelly from 90210. That was just not the case when I originally watched it and loathed her all in my lonesomeness. 😛

Cordelia Chase. I don't necessarily hate her. But when I first found out she was to be on Angel I was grievously disappointed. Though I can love things Cordelia says or does sometimes, overall, I'll never like her as a character and I don't really understand why people do. Basically, I don't think she's a very good character. She's good for comedic relief and blunt comments, but all the manouvering of the Angel-writers couldn't make her into a believable "champion" or even good person, for me.

Phoebe from Friends. I will never forgive her for Smelly Cat. It's one of those things that never fails to get stuck in my head. Plus we are possibly too similar in ditzyness. Great, now I have Smelly Cat in my head again.

Smelly cat, smelly cat...
I'm not sure I hate any character, but these are the characters I find overrated:

1) Lorelai and Rory from Gilmore Girls. I dislike the way they treated Richard and Emily. One of my pet peeves is lack of respect for the elderly. I don't see the horribleness Lorelai sees in her parents. They seemed like normal and loving parents to me. Yes, they can be overbearing and have their own values and way of seeing the world, but they don't deserve to be abandoned by their only child and deprived of their grandchild.

2) Phoebe Buffay from Friends. I love Phoebe in the early seasons, but dislike how disrespectful and cruel she became towards Chandler and Ross in the later seasons. (I say that and Phoebe/Ross is my OTP)

Sooo your Monica or Rachel then? :)
I have to admit, I always liked Buffy. But lately she has dropped some places on my favorite scale. I recently also read some Comics of Buffy and there is a comment, where she also made a mean comment over someone, I really like. And that's the reason. Not that I hate her - but I am now neutral towards her.

I just gave that show a watch and worse than actually doing that is Elena's reaction to it. How little do care about your brother that someone who killed him (or tried to) is someone you can love? That is its own special brand of terrible.

Oh I hate Elena Gilbert too. But I didn't really think she was a beloved character. That's why I didn't mention her on this thread. My goodness is she awful though.
So whiny and constantly the damsel in distress even when she is a vampire. I could seriously write an essay on why I hate her so much, so I will just have to stop myself now lol.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Rephrasing on the topic of the thread, I am just stunned that a large portion of the shows fans see Damon snap Elena's (the girl he loves) brothers neck and thinks to themselves "that is a perfectly great way to start a love story". I feel like a must be missing something.

I might have to disagree with you on that one as I'm pretty sure Ted has always been pretty universally loathed. I have seen so many articles over the years about why he sucks.

In the earlier seasons I thought he was a delightfully sanguine character full of fun quirks but he suffered badly from flanderisation and a slow and steady character assassination over the last few seasons.

Yeah Brucas for life. I like to tell myself that the show would have ended with them if Chad didn't cheat on Sophia
@MarieVampSlayer I can understand your feeling. Not going to lie I hate Peyton for subjective reasons that are not necessary attached to the characteristics of the character itself. You see Brooke is my favorite character and Brucas my favorite relationship on the show. So I'm not neutral on her I hate her because she broke my favorite couple and she hurted Brooke so much by doing this. I had a hard time to forgive her the first time, but I did, but the second time I really can't. That doesn't mean I can't empathize to her pain, I was sad for her when she lost her mother Elie or when Derek attacked her, but still I don't love her and I will never do I think. And come on Peyton/Jake was by far a better couple than Leyton.

To be honest I love Peyton but I am a Brucas. Brooke and Lucas were the best!
@Antho

I agree!!! Stupid Chad ruined everything! I always saw Peyton with Jake too. The baby arc was great for her because of her problems with her mom!
